The roles of jewellery as symbols of power
Jewellery was worn by men and woman of all social classes. Statues of kings and gods were covered with lavish jewels and the dead were sent into the afterlife with jewellery from the living. Earrings, armbands, rings, collar pieces, anklets and bracelets were the main jewellery worn in ancient Egypt. The main materials used to create ancient Egyptian jewellery was copper and gold. The move expensive jewellery was covered with various gems and semiprecious stones. The most expensive stones that were used in jewellery where lapis lazuli, turquoise, garent, carnelian and rock crystal. Emerald and pearls that were native to Egypt were the most used in jewellery. Faience was another commonly used material which was made of ground quartz mixed with colorant which was heated and molded to look more like expensive natural stones.
