The earliest Egyptians dug holes and buried the dead in them. The heat and dryness of the sand dehydrated the bodies very fast making almost life like natural 'mummies." Later the Egyptians began burying the dead in coffins to make sure the wild animals did not eat or attack the bodies. However the Ancient Egyptians soon found out bodies that were placed in a coffin decayed much faster and not leaving a life like body. The main reason the Ancient Egyptians mummified the dead was they believed when someone died the spirit left their body and once it was buried it would return to the body hence why they tried to keep it looking life like.
